eHistology - online annotated histology of the mouse embryo

You are here

The eHistology online resource (www.emouseatlas.org/emap/eHistology/index.php)  provides free-access to high-resolution colour images digitized from the original histological sections used in the Atlas of Mouse Development by Kaufman (1994, Academic Press/Elsevier). The images are provided with the original annotations and plate numbering of the paper atlas and enable viewing the material to cellular resolution. There is a plate and image selector to provide an easy way in to find the matching view from the atlas and each image can be "zoomed" into cellular resolution yet retain the annotation flags. The annotations as defined by Professor Kaufman have been included by agreement with Academic Press/Elsevier and will be available for free download from the Edinburgh University data archive.

The resource is a series of high-resolution histology images delivered from a tile server (IIP) with associated annotations and image locations from a mySQL database. The interface is developed as an Ajax/Javascript application and will run in any browser but works best in FIrefox or Chrome. The resource has been published Elizabeth Graham, Julie Moss, Nick Burton, Chris Armit, Lorna Richardson and Richard Baldock (2015) The atlas of mouse development eHistology resource Development. 142:1909-1911. doi: 10.1242/dev.124917 and the underlying code is available on request (Richard.Baldock@igmm.ed.ac.uk).
